Our Glendale Plumbers Explain What Makes Your Shower Drain Smell

Don Jones Plumbing • 14 July 2023

Being greeted by a foul smell when stepping into the shower is an unpleasant surprise. Luckily, getting rid of the offending stench is fairly easy. Below we explain the most common reasons why your shower drain is emitting an odor. If you need plumbing services, including solving shower drain smells, in Glendale, AZ, or the surrounding areas, give Don Jones Plumbing a call.

The Strainer Is Clogged

Strainers are there to keep hair and all the other gunk that comes through your shower out of your drain. But strainers can become clogged too. You may have also noticed the water taking longer to drain. Some strainers can be removed by hand, but others might be screwed in place. After unscrewing the top, throw on a pair of gloves and remove the debris that’s attached to your strainer. It’s also a good time to clear out any hair that made its way into the drain pipe. Give the strainer a good scrub using hot water and dish soap or a mildew-cleaning solution.

Mold Has Moved In

Any place that’s dark and humid is the perfect setting for mold to thrive. That’s why it’s important to check your shower drain for mold when you notice a bad smell. Remove the strainer to check for mold. You can clean the strainer the same way we mentioned above, but first, spray it with hydrogen peroxide to kill the mold. To destroy mold inside the drain, you can use a solution made of vinegar, borax, and peroxide.

Dried Out P Traps

P traps are curved portions of your shower drain that hold a small amount of water while the rest of the water from the drain passes through. P traps are meant to block the odors that rise up from the sewers. If you detect a rotten egg smell, it could be sewer gas coming through due to a dry P trap. Pour a couple of cups of water down the drain and wait about an hour to see if the smell has dissipated. You may need the help of a plumber if the stench lingers.
