Extend the Life of Your Water Heater With These Tips

Don Jones Plumbing • 17 November 2022

The majority of our everyday activities—including showering, doing laundry, and washing dishes—involve hot water. That’s why you want your water heater to last as many years as possible. Water heaters are easy to ignore, but by following a few of our tips you can easily add years to yours. When you need water heater repair or are in the market for a new one in Glendale, AZ, or the surrounding areas, give Don Jones Plumbing a call.

Routine Water Heater Maintenance
Start by adjusting the thermostat to 120 degrees. This will save up to five percent on your energy bills and prevent scalding. While most water heaters are tucked away in the garage or a closet, don’t be tempted to stack your storage boxes against them. Water heaters should have at least two feet of clearance around them to allow enough space for adjustments and repairs.

A few times a year you’ll want to drain your water tank to clear out sediment. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve, turn off the cold water supply, then run water into a bucket until it is clear. If the water is still cloudy, drain the tank once more and temporarily open the water supply valve to stir up any lingering particles.

Every year, discharge the temperature-pressure relief valve two or three times to test it. Keep a close eye out for any minor valve leaks after testing. If you notice any leaks or abnormalities, call your local plumber to inspect the problem.

Before You Leave Town
To save on money and energy, you can set your water heater to ‘vacation mode’ rather than completely shutting it off. If your water heater doesn’t have this option, lower the temperature slightly to keep the heater from cycling so frequently.
