Top Reasons a Toilet Won’t Flush

Don Jones Plumbing • 12 October 2022

Anyone with indoor plumbing has run into a toilet issue at least once in their life. One of the most common problems is a toilet that won’t flush. We’ll explain a few of the top reasons why your toilet is failing to flush below. When you’re having plumbing troubles in Glendale, AZ, or the surrounding areas, give Don Jones Plumbing a call.

There Is a Clog
A clog is often one of the biggest culprits of flushing issues. Clogs can be caused by a variety of things, such as too much toilet paper or a plastic toy getting thrown in the bowl. Clogs can often be alleviated with a plunger, but call your local plumbing service if that doesn’t do the trick. To help prevent clogs, the only things that should be flushed are waste and toilet paper. Even “flushable” wipes can wreak havoc on your plumbing.

There Isn’t Enough Water in the Tank
Normally, the tank that sits behind the toilet bowl will empty and refill with water after being flushed. If this doesn’t happen, the flush valve may be turned off. This can be easily fixed by simply switching the valve back on. Other times, the float ball in the tank may be having trouble adjusting to the water levels. Call a plumber to investigate when this happens.

The Flapper or Chain Are Damaged

The intake hole is opened and sealed off by the flapper, a rubber component, allowing water to enter the tank and flush everything down the drain. However, a damaged flapper will result in a toilet that is perpetually "filling." This is due to the flapper's inability to close the water intake hole, which effectively prevents the tank from ever "flushing" water. Additionally, the chain that lifts and lowers the flapper could be disconnected, broken, or too loose. If the chain is only disconnected, it can be easily reattached. Fortunately, neither of these parts is expensive if they need to be replaced.
